Churches

Church architecture has been a regular part of our portfolio since our inception and we have considerable experience in working with a number of Christian denominations, including the Baptist, Methodist and Roman Catholic churches, along with several Diocese of the Church in Wales and the Church of England.

Director, Julie Boultby BA, B.Arch, RIBA, CA, sits on the Diocese of Bristol Advisory Committee and is an active member of the Ecclesiastical Architects and Surveyors Association (EASA).

Commissions involve new churches, extensions, sympathetic repairs, access improvements, new kitchens and toilets, re-wiring, heating and lighting schemes, Quinquennial Inspections and expert advice.

  • Chancel restoration

    Apse has been the retained architectural practice for the Dartmouth group of churches since 2014 and has carried out numerous projects including works to the chancel at St Saviour’s church, a Grade I Listed building, containing a nationally important medieval brass.

    We are currently working on an exciting and innovative project to cut carbon emissions across the group and another project to improve accessibility.

  • Kitchen/toilet facilities

    We were asked to oversee the conversion of a vestry to a kitchen and accessible toilet within a beautiful small granite church on the edge of Dartmoor. The toilet is also available for walkers to use.

    We are also working with this church on internal re-ordering and external repairs.

  • Tower repairs

    We have been involved with various tower and spire projects in England and Wales. Recently we were commissioned to oversee the repairs to the tower and spire of St Mary Magdalene’s church in Torquay, which was supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

  • Church repairs and redecoration

    We led a programme of repairs to St Michael’s church, Ilsington, a Grade I Listed building within a Conservation Area. This involved works to the roof, walls, windows and interior.

    We are also leading a project to an adjacent separately Listed structure within the grounds.
